  Case: Parents who make excuses
Mr. Bailey has a student who is unmotivated and never completes his assignments. He has contacted the parent through phone calls and emails; however, every time he interacts with the parent, she makes excuses for him not completing his work such as, "Well, he didn't complete that assignment because I had to work late" or "I had the same problem with his brother." What should Mr. Bailey do?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Give this child an opportunity to do it at school. This is where our jobs are tough. Families like this have made excuses for themselves or has had someone make excuses for them their whole lives. It trickles down and becomes a never-ending cycle.

The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement Yes
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue Yes
The suggested solution is original Yes
Comments: I think this solution is more effective because if a young student is not getting their work done it probably has a lot to do with the parents.

Comments: I agree with this solution because it gives the student the opportunity to turn it around. Instead of being able to find an excuse the student will have to complete the work. This may help the child gain the confidence to be able to complete the assignment regardless of the situation.

Comments: I agree that the child should get an opportunity to do the work at school. It does not sound like it is the child's fault and yet they are being penalized with not getting the work done.

Comments: This solution gives the student the opportunity to have control over how he does or does not complete his homework. Communicating with the parent is essential to having them recognize the student is the one who is losing out. Additional advantage is the teacher is available if the student has questions about the assignment.

Comments: I agree with you completely. Unfortunately some families are too busy to help their children with homework and the best thing to do is give them time at school to do it.

Comments: I think this is a good suggestion but there may not be time at school to do homework. It is meant to be practice for home. If the child is not able to do the work without parental input it could be that the homework is too difficult to be assigned as independent work. The parent should not have to help with homework-just set up a place and time for the child to complete it.

Comments: I agree that allowing the child to do their homework during silent time or morning bell work can show them that homework is important. The only downfall is allowing the child to do this every day, this may set the child in a never ending cycle pushing it off until school.
