  Case: Parents who make excuses
Mr. Bailey has a student who is unmotivated and never completes his assignments. He has contacted the parent through phone calls and emails; however, every time he interacts with the parent, she makes excuses for him not completing his work such as, "Well, he didn't complete that assignment because I had to work late" or "I had the same problem with his brother." What should Mr. Bailey do?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I always tell my parents who constantly have excuses that it is not the parent's responsibility to do the work. If you are working late or are busy, your child needs to take responsibility to get his work done. If the student continues to make excuses, take away privileges to make them realize how important that extra work time is. If they can't complete it at home, they will have to find time to complete at school such as recess.

Comments: If a student is not getting work at home done it often is the parents fault, to punish the student would be unfair.

Comments: This is not good advice to solve the problem. Children do what they are allowed to. Education doesn't just fall on the teacher, student, or parent. It is everyone's responsibility.

Comments: I agree that explaining to the parent the importance and relevance with the student, however I don't think that telling a parent how to parent is a good idea.

Comments: Yes, it is the student's responsibility to do the work, but if a parent is not home to make sure they do it, then they won't. The child may be having trouble and may need extra help.

Comments: It is the childs responsibility to get the work done even if the parent is not home. The child learns the material in school and should have a good idea how to do the work on their own.

Comments: I think this is a great solution. I do think that sometimes students need help and parents should be there but it is not there responsibility to do the work. Instead find out if someone else stays with the child, and encourage them to help the student complete their homework. Talking to the student and telling them that you understand its hard but you really need them to just try is helpful too, to understand that it doesn't have to be perfect but you do want to see that they are trying.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would exactly do this. Perhaps the parent is not aware that their own excuses are not helping the issue. The student should be responsible themselves, should be held accountable for not completing the assignment, and given the opportunity to complete the assignment at school if they can't complete the assignment at home.

Comments: I believe this is the best solution to helping both the parents and student by reminding the parent that it's not their responsibility to do the work. The parent won't be taking the test or final at the end of the year. If the parent continues to help their child then this can long term impact the student. The student needs to figure out a way to do the assignment at school maybe on the school bus, during lunch or recess. Just because the parent is at work late doesn't mean the student can't conduct homework at the aftercare or with the babysitter. I think this is the best response on how to help the student recognize it is their responsibility and not the parent.

Comments: I feel like this is from a parents perspective more than a teachers. As a teacher, we need to make sure that our students know the important aspects that homework has.
