  Case: Difficult IEP Meetings
A teacher has difficulty with her EBD student. He does not work independently. He has difficulty with grade level work and he does not complete homework, nor does his mother work with him to get it done. His IEP meeting is approaching. How does this teacher confront this parent about these issues. I always pull the positive out. He is a friendly student who enjoys helping his teacher, etc. but the facts are that this child has difficulty with above stated issues. The teacher does not feel beating around the bushes about these issues will benefit this family at all.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I completely understand the difficulty of presenting a parent with information they may feel is negative. Definitely present positive info first as you stated. Also, ask the parent if they have any concerns before you start. That let's them feel that you are interested in their view point as well. Usually if a parent is able to talk to you and get their feelings out, it will calm their nerves. Throughout the year, call them just to say something positive and brag. Then, when you have to present the negative, they will be more open to hearing it. I hope this helps!

Comments: I agree with your suggestion and think it will help the student. I do think it is good to ask the parent their concerns and to be positive. Yes, the child has to improve, but highlight the positives while stating the negatives as well. Good suggestion!

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would do exactly this. Keeping everything positive as much as you can is a good solution because then when you have to be negative it won't be as bad if there have been lots of positives leading up to it.

Comments: This is a helpful solution. I would also add to do a "compliment sandwich". Start with your compliments, continue with your worries, and finish with compliments.

Comments: I agree with this statement. staring the meeting with positives is a good way to create a positive atmosphere and environment. also asking the parent if they have any concerns is a great way to get the parent involved and a way for you to branch out and explain your concerns.

Comments: It is always a great idea to let the parents know that you are interested hearing their viewpoint and not feeling that as the teacher you are already going to tell the parent only the bad news. I think it is a great idea to call the parents every now and then to tell them something positive about their child so when it is time to tell the parents bad news they would be more open to hear it. Great observation and will keep this in mind if something like this pops up in my classroom.

Comments: This is great advice. If a parents feels as though you are on their students side, then hearing something negative isn't as bad. You don't want the parents to feel like you are attacking their child.
