  Case: Neglect or not neglect?
A child comes in dirty and smelly. He is depressive. He is very slow, like a snail. He does not complete tasks independently and has zero confidence. The teacher has spoken with his mother and she disclosed he has seen a lot of paternal violence. However, mom isn't top notch and always plays the "single mom" card. However, it is no excuse to have an un-bathed child. How does the teacher approach this with the mother?

Bathing the child might make a difference in how he feels during the day.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would pull the child aside and try to build his confidence in school. Get on a personal level with him and get him to trust you which will make him perform more in class.
Definitely submit this student to DFACs. This sounds like neglect and should be investigated further.

Comments: I agree this should be submitted to DFAC but I would have administration deal with that part.

Comments: I agree that it is important to let the child know that he has someone to talk to and to trust. I also agree that his sounds like child services needs to get involved.

Comments: I wouldn't do this exactly. While I would recommend getting on a personal level with the student to build his confidence, I don't think the mother should be reported right away. Maybe have a chat with the school social worker first and have him/her have a chat with the mother further in depth about the severity of the issue before taking any drastic measures.

Comments: Getting the student confident, and building his or her trust in you is important--and essential. However, I'm not sure that simply pulling the student aside will help them build confidence.

Comments: I would not do this the student might not like getting the special attention, and this might cause turmoil between other students and make his day even more stressful.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would not use this solution because this can cause a rift between the mother and the teacher because the student may start to "favor" the teacher. This can lead to the mother making complaints about the teacher. Complaints may escalade quickly and become untrue, but now it is the mother's words against the teacher's. This is unsafe for everyone (including the student).

Comments: I think FCAC is too intense to start with. Try to talk to the mother again and tell her the consequences if she doesn't start complying

Comments: I don't think solution is useful because pulling the student aside separately can make him feel more isolated and cause him to draw further into himself.

Comments: I wouldn't put the mother under investigation because it could be the father that is the problem.
