Case: Divorced and double
One of my students has parents that are divorced. Each parent wants two sets of every paper I send home. This includes homework. I can tell that each parent wants to be the main parent and have the student do all of the homework with them. I can tell that the student does not like this because she is now having to do double the homework. Do I say something to the parents or just stay out.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would say the primary custodian would be the one who would get all of the information. It is the parent's responsibility to communicate with each other to provide what is best for the child. |

Comments: This doesn't take into account if the parents have joint/equal custody. This does not really provide a solution. Although it is the parents' issue to figure out as a teacher you should try to help the child as well. |

Comments: Only sending information to one parent when both have made it clear that they want to be involved could make the parent who is not the primary custodian angry with the teacher. They may feel as though they are being left out of their child's education and that could cause conflict. |

Comments: The teacher is not responsible for deciding who the student's primary caretaker is. |

Comments: As part of a split family this answer is not useful at all. There are no such things as primary custodial parents in the state of FL any longer (at least for families with 50/50 custody). Parents do not always amicably communicate and thus the child is the only one who losses in the situation. |

Comments: It is not the teachers decision to decide something like that. The parents need to fix that among themselves. |

Comments: As someone with divorced parents, the custodial parent is not the only one who needs to know what's happening in school. |

Comments: Sadly, the teacher doesn't know who the primary caretaker is so they can't make that choice without the other parent getting mad. |

Comments: This is not what I would do because a lot of the time there is not a primary custodian. This suggestion does not solve the problem and it is not reasonable. |
