Case: Commentary is not Necessary
I have a student in my 2nd grade class who just transferred from Chile. He is very loud and outspoken. He constantly interrupts the other students and says very inappropriate things to others. He sometimes struggles to understand what his peers and teachers are saying because of the language barrier. I think that his behavior is his way of coping and dealing with the major change in his life. What should I do to address this in a sensitive way not to shut him down completely?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would start with referring the new student to the counselor, following the school system protocol for ESOL and setting up a parent conference to discuss behavior and academic concerns. Meanwhile, I would assign him a student to be a peer mentor to help him understand routines and expectations as well as assist him with assignments. |

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would do exactly this. I feel that the easiest way to handle situations like these is to follow the school's protocol for ESOL and then find additional resources, such as counselors. There are ESOL programs for these reasons, and when in need, teacher's should use them to the fullest extent. |

Comments: I love that you immediately jumped toward ESOL protocol - this could easily be a matter of culture. I also very much like the idea of having a peer to model the behavior expectations of the classroom - the student could be just as lost as the teacher as to what to do. |

Comments: Setting up a meeting with the counselor and ESOL team will help the student transition better. Peer mentors can help teach students who are struggling, because they can offer academic and social help, and teach the student social language and the differences between cultures. They can encourage students to follow school rules and make friends. |

Comments: Having a peer mentor could really help the student to understand what is going on, how they can act or behave, and how to solve a problem. Counsellors and parent conference can help teachers solve the problem and th parents understand what is occurring. Great idea! |

Comments: This solution is helpful because the student will be able to learn classroom routines and expectations by following the example of another student.
ESOl protocol will also help with giving the student the proper services to break down language barriers. |

Comments: I do believe the guidance counselor should be included, it does sound like he is stressed out and that is his coping mechanism. But, either way, the student needs to learn what is and what is not acceptable. |
