Case: Chastising a Student
A student's parent was recently incarcerated so they allowed a family member to be recalled for reinforcement if the teacher needed the help. This family friend was allowed to chastise the student when they misbehaved. The teacher was unaware when the parent was released so they continued to contact the family friend. This angered the parent who called the teacher and was very irate. How should the teacher resolve this problem?

First I would have reported to the school counselor if I knew about the student being chastised to ensure there was not abuse going on so they could speak with the student. I would explain to the parent in a calm voice that I was unaware they were back home and apologize for the misunderstanding. I would assure the parent that I will make a note to contact the parent if there are any issues. |

| Comments: I think that notifying a counselor is a good idea to help the student and to help prevent possible emotional abuse of the child. I also think that explaining the situation to the parent, and making sure they communicate helps to solve the problems. |

| Comments: We can only do so much as teacher and without knowledge that the parent was back home there is no way the teacher should be held in the wrong, but it is important to calmly explain the situation to the parent and let them know that you need to be kept in the loop to avoid future issues. |
