Case: I Wish I Were Black!
As a teacher of 5th grade students, I try to make sure that my students have a good sense of all the people and cultures that make up this country. Last couple weeks, I paid special attention to the African American people who have made significant contributions to the US. We read a book written by Walter Dean Myers. We have studied scientists, writers, and political figures. Students were very engaged and interested in the content. Yesterday something happened that puzzled me. Three of my White students told me that they wished they were Black. This was not my intention when I planned all my lessons on contributions of African Americans. How should I address this issue?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
This seems like a tough situation when you are put on the spot like that, since it is an atypical response. I would try to come-back with questioning, "Why do you wish you were Black? What about being a Black person have you learned that makes you wish that?" (Questioning these students, in a non-derrogatory manner in front of the class, can serve as a summative review of what they learned about African Americans.) After they have given you responses, I would then say, "Now can you think of any White/Asian, Hispanic, etc. people who have accomplished those types of things too?" If they can not respond, you can then mention similar people from different racial backgrounds all from the US who have made significant contributions. To tie up the conversation, I would then ask the students, "After seeing that many DIFFERENT types of people can ALL accomplish great things in this magnificent country of ours, don't you think children from other countries might be saying, "I wish I were American!? And not just a certain color?" This idea will stress that living in the United States can provide you with more opportunities to do great things and take the emphasis off of color and on to the actual people. |

| Comments: I think that this is a good way to address the statement that was made in class. I think that this is not necessarily a bad thing for students to say. But as this solution says asking students why is a good way to get them to use there critical thinking skills. Like the solution also mentions you can talk about the fact that all kinds of people do great things, not only black people. It is important that this lesson is eye opening to them to see that diversity is a good thing. |

| Comments: I think your point about looking into the accomplishments of other cultures is a great idea. You can even ask them to go into their own histories, and look at the accomplishments from their own cultures, ethnicities, European or otherwise. |

| Comments: As I was reading your solution, it also made me think of another idea. This discussion could lead to GREAT writing ideas. What a great way to write an informational compare/contrast essay on important people from two differing cultures. Since America is seen as a dominant culture, it would be good to have the students choose two people from the more dominated cultures in the society to help being awareness to the many positive attributes that people from dominated cultures have contributed to the American society. |

Bringing up people who have also did great things from different races is good because its giving them a chance to see great things that can be accomplished by humans not by race. |

| Comments: There are so many people who made enormous contributions to American History. I think that allowing students to continue their research into different people of all backgrounds, cultures, races, etc. would show students the diversity of our history. Furthermore, maybe allow students to do research on their own family culture and background and share the findings with the class. Students should be proud of who they are and realize that everyone in their own unique way can be successful and make an impact. |
