Case: "R" rated video during class time
Your students have worked hard preparing for an exam, and they are asking that you reward them by showing an unapproved "R" rated video during class time. One of the students rents the movie and brings it to class. Previously, you had seen the movie and you think it is ok. Were any ethics principles violated?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
None of the ethics were violated until you show the movie. In my school system, movies must be approved and they must be in the lesson plans. I would tell the students to watch those movies at home because they are not appropriate for school. I would find another way to reward them in a way that is beneficial for both the students and the teacher.

Comments: This is a good point. It is the teacher's job to control the class and it is clearly unethical to show an unapproved movie.

Comments: Yes. Children will ask for anything. I would contact administration to let them know what is going on and ask the student to put the movie back in their backpack that we just simply can't watch the movie due to ethics instilled by the school.

Comments: The part of this that I do not agree with is the comment of inviting the students to watch the movie at home. The focus should be what they can do in the classroom to reward and support the students for a job well done

Comments: I agree with this solution. Since the movie has not yet been approved, the teacher should find another way to reward the children or wait until the movie is approved.

Comments: Absolutely agree. I also like the idea of sending permission slips to high school if the R rated movie is needed to illustrate a part of the curriculum and has been approved.
