Case: RTI Student
Mr. Howell has a student who refuse to do any work. The student will not even take notes. His mother has been called on several occasions, nothing has happened. This student is in Tier three for RTI. If you are required to RTI this student, what are some possible solutions to reach this student?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Depending on how severe the case is, Mr. Howell could implement some form of incentive based learning or behavior interventions. For every task that this student completes, there should be a points system that will earn them a bigger reward. The student should also be given personal and academic goals that he or she agrees to work on, which enables the student to take ownership of his or her's behavior. |

Comments: I also thought of incentive/behavior interventions. For instance, I have one student who loves getting on Mobymax.com whenever she has free time. This child is also a behavior child who I have worked hard with already this year to establish a great relationship. I have a token system with her. If she completes her work without me having to redirect her because she would rather do something she wants to do or she just flat out refuses to complete the task in front of her, then she gets a token. When she reaches her goal or set amount of tokens, she can cash them in for Moby Max time on the computer. This has worked well for this individual child.
Focusing on more of Mr. Howell with the RTI student- I have not had that kind of trouble with my tier students. All of them are eager to learn and want to do better for themselves. However, if I did have the same problem as Mr. Howell, I wold do like the previous solution suggested: create a few educational goals the student can actually reach or complete, and then the student and Mr. Howell should work together to work on some sort of incentive plan for the student to follow so he/she could reach those goals. |

Comments: Some students just need a little extra motive in order to find interest in work. It is also important to have a disciplinary program for when things are not completed. |

Comments: This is a good solution. However, remember that if you are offering a reward to just one student, it could cause problems in the classroom. |

Comments: It sounds like an incentive or reward system would work best to motivate the student. Allowing the student to complete a survey of the incentives they would definitely help in ensuring that the student is highly motivated to attempt the work. |
