Case: Take Your Time Young Man
I have a student that completes reading assessments or assignments in about 10 to 15 minutes. It is obvious that the student is not giving his best effort due to the time invested in the assignment and the grade received. I have looked at his Lexile level and the assignments are not too hard. How do I get this student to take more time with completing reading assignments or assessments?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I have a student who continually rushes through his work as well. I now have an agreement with him that work is not turned in before a 30 minute window has passed, and this must be spent engaged in reading and completing the work. If he turns it in at 30 minutes, I score it. If he has less than an 75, I give him a blank copy and he must start again. We have had multiple conversations regarding this, and he knows that if he wants to rush and fail, that means he must do it again. I average the two scores together as well, and he has learned that this means a lower grade will bring his score down. He seems to work harder on the second one. I am hoping he learns to do it right the first time!

Comments: I would definitely do this, making there a time minimum forces the student to slow down and take their time and check over their work when they finish.

Comments: Great strategy! I love the fact that the grade he gets is ultimately up to him, and he can see this through your grading system.

Comments: I like this suggestion, the most important part is that learning is taking place. The only exception I have is the averaging the grade. I think that if the child does it the second time and gets a better grade, then that would be the one he keeps. If the child is at the end doing a good job, the grade should reflect that.

Comments: This solution is relevant and will likely be beneficial when implemented correctly. Students don't want to complete an assignment multiple times. The only question that I have is how you differentiate the time when as assessment should not take thirty minutes to complete or when it should take longer than thirty minutes to complete. I'm also under the impression that once the student begins to put forth the effort on the first assessment, regardless of how much time it takes him/her, you might re-evaluate the mandatory thirty minute time that they must spend, right?

Comments: This seems like an approach that may work. By having him do the assignment a second time, if he scores low, you are encouraging him to read a second time and that will assist with his comprehension.

Comments: By not allowing the student to rush through the work the teacher can make sure the student takes the extra time to look over the work. Often times students like this may not be feeling challenged enough. Maybe make the assignment a little more challenging for the student.

Comments: This is good. The realization that he is going to have to do it over again if it is not acceptable, will provide incentive to work harder the first time.
