Case: Science Department Chair
A teacher was given the responsibility of becoming Science Department Chair. The principal has challenged the teacher to help increase test scores in the area of science as they have been quite low in the past few years. After meeting with the teachers of the science department, the teacher realized that the morale is very low, and that many of the science teachers are teaching multiple subjects, in multiple grade levels, so are stretched very thin. What can the teacher do to raise the morale of the science department teachers, which in turn could improve test scores?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
To improve moral and test scores, it may be helpful for the department chair to develop some hands on inquiry lessons for these teachers. Give them the tools to use, taking some of the load off their shoulders. Often, the planning is harder than the implementation. Inquiry based science increases student engagement as well as positive affects test scores. |

Comments: This put a lot of extra pressure on a teacher as a Department Chair, but as chair I feel this teacher should do as much extra work as possible in order to make sure all teachers in the department are properly prepared. |

Comments: I like this solution. My co-teachers and I meet every Thursday to discuss what we are teaching in each content area for the next week. We also bounce differentiation ideas and activities off of each other. This has become a huge help since we are being evaluated by TKES- differentiation is a big part of that evaluation system. I think it would be beneficial for all of the science teachers to meet and come up with inquiry lessons that they could all use or change and modify to use in their own classes. When teachers plan together and help each other out, it makes the planning part easier! |

Comments: I agree with this statement because time is essential and we need to make sure that the department chair is doing the right amount of work to help give the accurate tools to help the teachers. By having more lessons for the teachers will help them relax and provide more time to teacher while helping them being more motivated. |
