Case: Big Bully
A student who is in elementary school is overweight. The student is often made fun of, called names and verbally abused. The teacher has gained information on this situation and wants to handle it as delicately and effectively as possible.
What should be her first plan of action?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
We had a big problem last summer at the Recreation Center with bullying. There are a lot of activities that you can do with children to help them understand that bullying is wrong. One activity is called sticks and stones. In this activity you have children draw a picture on a gray sheet of paper of something that is a bully. For example, they could draw a bad word, bad name calling, or pictures of children being mean to each other. For this paper only use red or black color crayons. Then you have them take the gray sheet of paper and crumble it up as best as they can. Then, instruct them to take that sheet of paper and try to flatten it out as to try and wipe the bad things away. Explain to them that the effects of bullying never really goes away and though apologizing, or straightening out the paper, is a start, you can never quite get all of the wrinkles out. I did this activity with my children and it definitely resonated a lot with them.
Inclusion also starts with the teacher. If the adults are completely accepting of all types of students, the students will be more accepting of each other. |

Comments: This is a neat suggestion of an anti-bullying activity. I also agree that inclusion starts with the teacher and the teacher needs to make sure that they are showing their acceptance of all students within their class. |

Comments: I really like this activity and think that it will send a powerful message. However, I think that simply doing class-wide activities in the case of bullying is kind of ignoring the problem. The individual students need to be brought to the side and told that what they are doing is wrong. That being said, IF this activity is done in conjunction with my suggestion, then I think the bullying would be greatly reduced. |

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would exactly do this. This is a unique solution to a very big issue students face in school. Having all the students in the classroom participate in this activity would help them to express themselves and see that there are lasting effects when you bully someone. |

Comments: I think some areas of this solution may cause further problems. The goal is to make bullies understand that their behavior is not acceptable and that it hurts others. Although I think it's good to make students understand how bullying affects others I think it's important to encourage change but the idea that nothing you do can make things better doesn't encourage change. If once you've been a bully you can't ever erase it then change is not worth the effort. It might be better to focus on how you could change the bad behavior. |

Comments: I think this is a neat activity to teach kids about bullying and its effects. I also agree that it starts with the adult's attitude. |
