  Case: Broken Arm
Ms. Sally has a student who has come to class with a broken arm on the day of their unit test. Because the arm that the student has broken is also the hand that he uses to write, it will be impossible for him to write his answers on his test. The grades for the unit test must be submitted that day, so there is no possibility for him to make the test up on another day. Ms. Sally can not use class time to personally administer the test to this student because must monitor the rest of the class while they take their test. What is Ms. Sally to do?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Ms. Sally could possibly pull that student during her planning time to take the test. Being a connection/exploratory teacher, I know it can get frustrating when academic teachers pull students during our instructional time, but with a situation such as this, we usually understand. She could have the student read the test, and answer the questions orally while she documents the students responses.

The suggested solution is respectful of the individual (student) Yes
The suggested solution is relevant to the case Yes
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement Yes
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue Yes

Comments: I think administering the test orally to the student will be the best course of action. The teacher will be able to see if the student was properly prepared and accommodate the broken arm.

Comments: This solution allows the student to not be penalized for an injury and would keep them from being a distraction to other students. If the teacher did not have time to administer the test and transcribe the answers, perhaps there is an assistant or other resource that can be used.

Comments: This is the best solution. Making alternative testing arrangements for the student. The student can read a book while the rest of the class is testing.

Comments: In a situation such as this, I think this is the best solution to take place. Although it can be frustrating getting a student pulled out of class to take a test, as you said it can be understandable to those teachers that this is the only way the teacher can fully help the child and the test be completed on time.

Comments: I agree with this statement because this will be the best way to help accommodate the student. I know it can be hard to not use their planning for the actual things needed but hopefully this can help the student to make sure they take the test.

Comments: This answer is the best because it is the most logical. The student should not be punished because they broke their arm, accidents happen and teachers should understand that. If a TA or adult assistant is not available to help the student during the designated exam time then the only solution would be for the teacher to give up their planning time.
