Case: All they need is love
A student who is diagnosed as ADHD continually disrupts class. This student throws things and throws tantrums. After this child makes a scene they run up to the teachers and professes how much they love the teacher. How should the teacher address this problem which happens on a consistent basis?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I have definitely had this situation happen in class. It is still necessary to be firm and administer discipline, especially if another student is harmed in the process and to show other students the behavior is not appropriate and will not be tolerated. I always told the student I loved them too, but we had to go talk about what just happened. This was in a pre-K setting, so I could leave the other teacher focused on the class while I spoke with the student at the back of the class. The parent was always informed (the student had other things going on that had not yet been diagnosed) and the front office was made aware as well. The student does need to be assured that their behavior has not diminished the love of caregivers, but that they need to work harder to express themselves appropriately.

Comments: This solution gets all parties involved, aware of the situation. Seems appropriate for the solution's age group. This solution summarizes the concept "I still like you, but I do not approve of your behavior."

Comments: It is helpful for students to always feel safe and cared for by teachers but the teacher also has responsibility to the other students in the classroom. The teacher might need some outside help to work out this issue.

Comments: I like this solution and agree that the student still needs to be assured that even those the behavior is not tolerated and needs to be fixed, they are still loved.

Comments: I love this suggestion because I think that children need to be reassured they are cared for but still recognize when they have misbehaved, I would do the same.

Comments: I appreciate the point about reassuring this young student that his behavior doesn't affect the teacher's feelings for him. It is obvious he is struggling with many issues and is truly concerned that he is losing his teacher's approval with his bad behavior. This teacher truly seems to look at this situation from many dimensions, while keeping all students safe.
