Case: Asthma in PE
Coach Lowe has several students that have asthma and often forget their asthma pump when they come to class. She has to record scores for every student for the Fitnessgram assessment. One of the tests the students must complete is the Pacer Test which measures the student's cardiovascular endurance. Three students forgot their pump on the day of the assessment. What can she do to accurately measure their cardiovascular endurance while still using the Pacer Test?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
This is a tough case. I would be afraid to make the students do anything strenuous due to the fact they do not have their inhaler. It would be very difficult to assess someone's cardiovascular endurance and get a true reading if they do not have their pump. To be on the safe side I would contact the students parents and not assess them without their pump. There are health risks involved and no need to jeopardize your certificate by trying to assess the cardiovascular endurance of these students knowing they do not have their asthma pumps. |

| Comments: I definitely agree. I would explain the importance of the test and make the students' parents aware of this and tell them a date you will reassess. This could be a case of simply forgetting; however, it could also be that it is happening on purpose. |

| Comments: This solution was very helpful, so I agree with everything in it. I would not risk my certification to go ahead and assess and possibly put those students in danger of having an asthma attack; rather I would make sure the students had their pumps with them so I could try to get somewhat of a true reading for this particular part of the Fitnessgram. |

| Comments: I agree with this solution completely. I think it is important for the parents to be notified that their child was unable to take the cardiovascular test due to not having their inhaler. I think it is also important to notify the parent that in order to get a grade for the test, the child needs to come to school the next day with the pump to take the test otherwise a grade may be issued. |

| Comments: I agree with this statement because I would not make the students do the test today if they don't have their pump. I would schedule a day to make sure that get a makeup on the test whether it is before or after school. I would also take a moment to remind the student why it is essential to make sure they have the pump for emergency situations. |

| Comments: Make-ups should be allowed. This would be for those who were sick or absent or could otherwise not participate. It would be a great health risk to make them carry on the test without their inhaler just in case something goes wrong. I would have them wait to the side and wait for the test to be done and contact their parents to schedule a make-up and have them ensure they have their inhalers next time. If the issue continues, contact administration about what to do. |
