Case: Connection Classes Don't Matter
Mr. White has students enter his technology class every semester that seem to not care about their grades. He has often heard students say that they don't have to pass his class to move on to the next grade. Students must pass six out of their eight connection classes to be promoted, but too often, students are permitted regardless. How can Mr. White make his students value his class and make them understand how it is relevant to them?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
This is a great post!! I see this so many times. I suggest Mr. White have local business owners come to the class to talk with the students about their success and how it may not matter now, but that striving to do your best and earning something is very rewarding. If you have any personal stories to tell, I would suggest sharing them with the students. If you have someone that would come in who still tends to struggle as an adult because they didn't take education seriously, I would do that also. I talk with my students one on one who show this attitude and try to encourage them as best I can to realize the rewards of earning something and doing their best. I even put them in an employer's scenario. I ask them if they were looking for someone to hire, what qualities would they look for and then I have them self-assess themselves in regards to their expectations of someone else. |

Comments: I like the idea of this and think it would be beneficial for them to understand that being successful starts with where they are now. I do this a good bit, but it probably would be beneficial for them to hear it from respectable people from within the community. |

Comments: This is a great idea. Getting students to see real people who have had success by trying their best gives them a real life example that promotes hard work. |

Comments: I agree and would do this myself. Having real life examples of things related to the course will interest the students. |

Comments: I love the idea of bringing in members of the community. This is a great way to show students how what they are learning is relevant to the real-world. |
