Case: New teacher, New school
A fairly novice teacher, teaching 2 years, moves to a new state and maintains a job over a phone interview.
This teacher a young middle class female is placed in a school with a high African American student body. The students at this school come from homes with one parent. There are cases of drug use in the house, boyfriends in and out of the home and very absent parents when it came to the school. When the mothers did come to the school it was usually a hostile situation and most of the time the parent was yelling at this young teacher.
The teacher knew that it was not at all the fault of the child and wanted to send a message to the parents that she wanted to partner with the parents for the sake of their shared student. How would the teacher reach that goal?

I think the teacher needs to do this through positive contacts. It will be time consuming, but when the parents understand that you are not only going to contact them when their child is being bad, but you will call them and praise their child when they are good, you earn their respect. Send home notes, make phone calls, print out certificates as often as necessary to show that the teacher cares about the student and wants him/her to be successful. |

| Comments: I agree that it would be effective for the teacher to make positive contacts, rather than negative ones. I would only add that a teacher should put a system in place so it is easier to implement. Perhaps when a student is having a good day, he or she can choose from a few rewards, one being a positive phone call home. Many students also realize the importance of a positive phone call home, so they will often choose it, even over something like a healthy snack. |

| Comments: This is a really good solution. I would use this in this particular situation. Often times parents are used to receiving calls only to discuss the bad, however if you call occasionally to discuss the good the parent is more likely to answer the phone. |

I like your idea on sending positive notes home. And although it is time consuming, sending lots of reminders or notes will encourage the parent(s) to involve themselves more. |

| Comments: I agree that the teacher can take different means to communicate with the parent(s) in positive ways so the parent will feel more willing to talk or help the teacher out as they gained their trust and support by seeing how the teacher support, respect, and care for the student. I do agree that parents mostly get messages when the child isn't behaving properly or isn't doing well in class so it is important to the parent to see the teacher taking extra time out of their day to send a good note to the parent. |

| Comments: I really think this is a great approach. Positive reinforcement that you send home will definitely send a positive message to the parents. By showing that you do care for your students will help reinforce the idea that you are not the enemy but are there as a tool to help parents. Be careful not to overstep when trying to earn their respect and treat them as an equal and do not use big words be extremely friendly. I love this approach though. |
