Case: Accelerated Math
At Newberry Elementary School, Accelerated Math is a differentiated program that has been purchased to increase student success in math. Teachers are expected to use this program for 30 minutes daily. Mrs. A thinks this program is truly valuable, but the way they are expected to use it is a train wreck. Students have to scan the work in, the scanner doesn't work all of the time, Mrs. A is expected to stop and reteach the students who perform low, the students make careless mistakes, etc. This tool is one way for Mrs. A to assess her students, but she doesn't feel that it gives a true picture of student understanding due to things going wrong during implementation. How can Mrs. A use this program more appropriately to truly assess her students learning?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
First, I would assess the current problems with the program with the administration in order to see if any other teachers are having the same troubles. Then, I would check and see if the lessons can be tailored to individual students. Many programs allow for this, and it helps students work on specific skills that they need to reinforce. This would also provide more accurate information, as it would show student progress, or lack there of, in their own developmental areas. |

Comments: I agree that you should find out if other teachers are having the same problem, if so you and the others could find out if there is a better way to upload the assingments. If not I believe the teachers could e-mail the company that issues the program and suggest a change, and discuss the issues they are having with the program. |
