  Case: Asthma in PE
Coach Lowe has several students that have asthma and often forget their asthma pump when they come to class. She has to record scores for every student for the Fitnessgram assessment. One of the tests the students must complete is the Pacer Test which measures the student's cardiovascular endurance. Three students forgot their pump on the day of the assessment. What can she do to accurately measure their cardiovascular endurance while still using the Pacer Test?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Coach Lowe cannot accurately administer the cardiovascular endurance test that day for those three students. The pump is not something they find important. Assign them a failing grade. Something has to motivate these students to bring their pump. Whatever that "something" is, use it. Contact the parents to make them aware of the importance of their child having their pump.

Comments: I think this is a bit harsh. You don't know the circumstances of why they forgot their pumps. This does not solve the issue.

Comments: I don't believe assigning students with health issues is a fair grading practice. This would not motivate them to bring in their inhaler but instead either put them at risk if they try to take the test so they do not fail, or penalize them for having a health issue.

Comments: It is correct that he cannot accurately administer the endurance test that day, but failing them is unnecessary and unhelpful. It may not be a case that the students don't find their pump important, so he shouldn't assume so.

Comments: I agree that the parents should be notified, however, I don't think a failing grade is fair because they happen to forget the pump on the day of the test. Situations happen every day in students home lives that need to be taken into account. I think the student should be given a second chance to take it and have the parent make sure to give it to the child.

Comments: I don't agree with this, just because not knowing the age of this group, some students may not remember. You are right that the coach cannot assess them that day.

Comments: I do not think that children should be penalized due because of a medical issue. Failing them for something they cannot safely participate in is a pretty low blow. I would not use this solution in my classroom because I do not think it is fair and it will probably make some parents angry.

Comments: You can't just punish them with a failing grade just because they they have a health issue and forgot their pump. I would speak with their parents and possibly have them keep a spare inhaler at the school.
