Case: Grade Changer
You are a new 3rd grade teacher and it is the end of the marking period. You are staying after school hours to do some last minute grading and inputting grades into the system. A parent enters your room and demands to speak to you about their child's recent test grade of a "c". The parent claims that this test score will lower their child's current grade standing of an "A" to a "B" and this is unacceptable. After a long conversation that parent requests that you change their child's grade. What would you do in this situation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would not change the grade and ask that a school administrator come to the classroom to reinforce this statement. |

Comments: I understand sticking to your guns however the school administrator may not always be available, especially after hours when you're there late grading papers. Also this solution didn't show any partnership with the parent so this relationship will probably be strained in the future. |

Comments: I would not do this in this situation and do not agree with this solution. I believe the teacher should explain to the parents why their child received the grade they did in this situation. |

Comments: I would not do this for this situation, by bringing in the administration this could make the parent feel intimidated and cause the situation to escalate. |

Comments: I think this issue could be solve without having to ask an administrator to come into the room. I think this would make the parent feel attacked. I would not do this. |

Comments: I think getting a school administrator involved should be done only after the teacher has attempted to resolve the issue with the parent first. |

Comments: I think that remaining calm and professional in this situation is important. Also, the school administrator would only make matters worse because they would be coming into a situation to mediate that they have no idea what is going on. |

Comments: I feel like there needs to be more of a conversation about what the rules are in your classroom before you have to go to administration. |
