Case: No zeros for no work
In this school system, teachers are not allowed to give students a zero when they do not return work. Some teachers do not agree with this policy. Thoughts?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
My former principal also implemented this same policy for students during her administration.
The positive side to this is that it gives students optimism about passing the course in case they decided they wanted to make an effort to try.
The downside to this is it gives students a false sense of reality. At the middle school level, students were receiving a grade of 50 for work that was not completed. However, that wasn't the case once they reached the high school level.
We saw many students have a difficult time transitioning at the high school level because of this policy. |

Comments: I agree to a certain extent with this. I do not think it helps the students at all, but instead it proves to be more harmful for them. As stated in this solution it became harder for them to transition onto the high school level because they did not turn in their homework. |

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would do exactly this. The false sense of reality could really hurt the student in the long run. If they don't do the work, they should receive the grade of 0 that reflects what they didn't do, period. |

Comments: This solution is the best because it shows the positive and negative side to no zeros, yet lets everyone reading know that the long term effect can be worse than the idea of having to give students a zero. It can cause problems later in their schooling if they are not used to receiving zeros. |
