Case: No zeros for no work
In this school system, teachers are not allowed to give students a zero when they do not return work. Some teachers do not agree with this policy. Thoughts?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Giving a zero for work not turned in does not reflect the student meeting the standards. The student should not get a zero for not turning in work. Instead, find was to reward students for turning in their work...maybe motivating students more. |

Comments: I would never do this. It does not make sense to now give the student a zero if they don't do their work. If they did 0% of the assignment why should they get any credit? In the real world, that is how it is going to work. So they might as well learn that in school. |

Comments: I do not agree with this. It is important to show and teach students about responsibility and that there is a consequence if they do not do what they are asked to do. |

Comments: This solution is least helpful because it gives students a sense of fabrication in their grades. There is no truth in the grade they have earned if they are not receiving zeros for work they did not do. Grades are earned, not passed along by lack of effort. Rewards should not be given out to make students do their work, their grades should reflect that. You do not punish an employee in a company by not giving him a piece of chocolate because he was late; you write him up and that goes on his "report card" or employee record. |
