  Case: A cheater or not
Ms. Case has a student that always looks at other students work when completing his work. For example, when asked to do a pattern, he will look at his neighbors pattern and copy their pattern. In small group when the teacher reads a book and asks questions he will only repeat what the other students say. There is no original thought or work for this student. When the teacher pulls this student for 1 on 1 instruction she is noticing that the student does not understand any of the skills being taught, but the student will yell saying, "Why am I doing this again I did this in small group and did it right?" How is she suppose to re-teach this student if he feels he has all the right answers when he clearly doesn't and he becomes uncooperative?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Ask students to complete different tasks in small group. For example have them pull cards with math equations and work them out separately. Try not to allow him the opportunity to look at someone elses paper or work because they are not completing the same tasks.

The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement Yes
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue Yes
The suggested solution is original Yes
Comments: I like this idea. It doesn't make the student feel isolated but it still requires the student to do come up with independent results. Great solution.

Comments: I agree with the student working on something else and not giving them the opportunity to copy off the other groups members. I think even have each group member work on something different in the group will help. Such as if a reading assignment maybe have one student read the passage, the other one thinking about the questions and passage and inputting their own thoughts with the group discussion, and one student writing down the answers to the questions, while another will be the presenter to the class.

Comments: This student may even benefit from having a desk away from others. Students benefit from seeing others work, and that is not always a bad thing.

Comments: I agree with this solution, do not give the student the chance to look at another students work or answers. Instead initiate sink or swim to see what the student can complete on their own.

Comments: I think this is an excellent idea and would use this in my future classroom. It is important to see if the student does actually know the concept and they are just being lazy or seeing that they do actually need help and can help/get help for that student. I feel that doing it in small groups and not individually makes the student feel like they are not a target or center of attention which I am sure they are happy about and would actually want to try and solve the problem.

Comments: I like this idea. This way it is still group work because the students can check each others work and ask each other for help, but the student in question can not just coast off of the work of others.
