  Case: Grade replacement
Johnny makes a 60 on his formative assessment. He is allowed to re-take the assessment. Should the grade be replaced in the grade book or an additional grade given to him?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I think replacing the grade is sufficient. The grade is a demonstration that the student has mastered the content covered on the assessment. The original grade no longer reflects what the student knows.

Another option is to average the two scores, and replace the average with the original score.

The suggested solution is respectful of the individual (student) Yes
The suggested solution is relevant to the case Yes
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement Yes
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue Yes
The suggested solution is original Yes
Comments: I agree that the original grade would no longer reflect what the student knows, and think averaging both the original and new grade would be a great way to solve this issue. It is reflective of both the students current knowledge and the students earned grade on the original assessment. It is a fair compromise in my opinion.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would do this. I agree that a students grades should reflect their understanding and knowledge. They should not be penalized for previous assessments. I liked how an alternative grading, the average of the test, was suggested.
