  Case: Math or Reading
A second grade student is a struggling reader, but can complete math facts and problems excellently. When given the formative math assessment, the student failed. He had to read the word problems and he didn't know the words. Should the student be penalized for not knowing the math vocabulary? Or should the teacher read the test to him?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I don't think it really demonstrates what the student knows in mathematics.

One option is to read the questions to the student to determine if they truly understand how to solve the math problems.

The suggested solution is respectful of the individual (student) Yes
The suggested solution is relevant to the case Yes
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement Yes
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue Yes
The suggested solution is original Yes
Comments: I agree with this solution. Just because she could not read the math problem or the terms does not mean they do not know math. I think having the teacher read the problem to them will help the problem.

Comments: I agree that the student needs to be tested this way so that a better solution can be made in class.

Comments: It would be a good for the teacher to read the problems for the first couple of assignments to determine where the struggle is, then adjust the lesson to provide accommodations for the student.

Comments: I would never do this! This is wrong! If a student doesn't understand a word they are reading then a teacher reading the same word to them is not necessarily going to enable them to then understand the meaning of the word.

Comments: Yes I agree! The student struggles with reading, not math. So help with the reading part so that he can show his ability with the math.

Comments: I agree, if the student understood how to solve the math problems, but simply could not read the questions, it is unfair to give him a failing grade when he does understand the material.
