Case: SPEAK ENGLISH! I am a Kindergarden teacher that has a big group of hispanic students in the classroom. Many of them do not know how to speak English and thus makes it very complicated and frustrating to communicate. What is even worse, is that these students tend to speak Spanish when they are amongst themselves. Clearly, as a teacher I want them to be able to Participate, however, I am not sure whether or not I should separate them and forcé them to leave their native tongue at home. Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!) This is a really tough situation. I would not split the children up completely because that could make them feel like they arein trouble when they're not. I would maybe split them up partially. Have a few in one area with English speaking children. That way the English speaking children can be an influence on the Spanish speaking children. If there are not English speaking children sitting near them it will be harder to pick up on the language. I would also consider putting labels around the room that are in English and spanish. That way all children are benefitting and learning the other language and how it relates to the classroom. I would not have them leave their native tongue at home however, I would encourage them to try using as much English as possible. I would also see if there was a Spanish teacher in the school. I would want to know their opinion on the matter. |
