Case: SPEAK ENGLISH! I am a Kindergarden teacher that has a big group of hispanic students in the classroom. Many of them do not know how to speak English and thus makes it very complicated and frustrating to communicate. What is even worse, is that these students tend to speak Spanish when they are amongst themselves. Clearly, as a teacher I want them to be able to Participate, however, I am not sure whether or not I should separate them and forcé them to leave their native tongue at home. Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!) No, I do not believe separating the students would be the right thing to do. They should be able to communicate amongst themselves in a manner that they feel the most comfortable. However, I do believe there needs to be some parameters created to ensure that English speakers are not left out and that there is also ample time for them to also speak English. There should be time set aside for free time and communication, but the majority of the time should be spent speaking the most prominent language of the class. They need to work to learn the English language and that cannot be done unless they are actively practicing. |
