Case: Special Education Reading Levels
I have a Special Education student in my third grade classroom who is currently reading on a first grade reading level. He is in my classroom for science and social studies, but is served in a resource classroom for all other subjects. He will be expected to take the Georgia Milestones assessment this year. Because of his reading level, he is not able to read texts that I provide in the classroom. What are some strategies I could implement in my classroom to ensure that he is being exposed to grade level standards that will be on the Georgia Milestones assessment?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
In order to bring his reading level up, you may want to try alternative approaches like pairing up with a good reader. Once his reading level is up, you can present grade level materials. |

Comments: I agree! Pairing the student with a fluent reader is a useful strategy. It is recommended to pair students according to ability. The following is a suggested strategy. You have 22 students in your class. 1 being your most fluent reader and 22 your least fluent reader. Group student 1 with students 11, student 2 with student 12, and so on. This will ensure that the students ability is not to broad. |

Comments: Paring with a partner might work, but I think the issue could be addressed by making your own materials, or being able to read it as a class and then discuss it. |

Comments: While the solution is respectful and somewhat relevant, it is not that useful and will probably not solve the problem. |

Comments: Having a partner could benefit him/her with their reading skills. It may be useful to read along with someone else while they are reading the text aloud. |

Comments: Since this student is very far behind, I do not think pairing him with another student is a good approach to getting him caught up. This other student would most likely be doing the reading for him, and i do not believe that he would benefit much from this. |
