Case: New Teacher to not so new kids
This year I was the new kid of the class. My students had been together since kindergarden. What are a few tips for new teachers, when the kids aren't so new?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would have the students debrief me about their classroom, which would most likely include classroom expectations, how work was administered, homework, classwork, group work, and other classroom routines that they were accustomed to. As a new teacher, I would not want to come into a classroom change the way things are and give the students the impression they were going to do things my way. It is important to work with students and not work against them. I believe if a new teacher were to show respect to the students, then the students would most likely give respect back. This is not to say that the way things are done would stay that way because every teacher has their own teaching pedagogy. What I am saying is to allow the students to speak first and get to know them before you make your presence know in an unwanted way.

Comments: I understand your point, but I would say that it is not important to keep the structure the same. The students have been together for a while, but they have not necessarily always had the same teacher. You do not want to start out the year thinking they can tell you how to run the class. If you want them to have input, you can first establish your rules, and have them give you some suggestions. But, don't have them start the year telling you how to do things.

Comments: I like this idea, however I do not think that the students should speak first. I think this would give them too much authority and could be problematic later.

Comments: I would never do this! This is wrong! The teacher needs to set the standards, not the students.

Comments: I do not think it is a good idea to have students tell you rules and regulations simply because they are children and may just be making things up as they go along to suite their needs. I also believe it is important as a teacher to teach in a way which you feel is effective and useful not simply fall in line to what has been previously implemented in this classroom.
