  Case: What did you say?
For your first few years as an ESOL instructor, you were provided with a bilingual assistant. You took her for granted, and now that she has moved on, you realize that you need help! The children that she used to communicate with and instruct in their native language are now asking you for help, and need assistance in their native language. What can you do to help this situation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
It is time to implement a lot of the strategies that you have learned as a pre-service teacher. Gestures, visuals, simple questions, and electronic translation devices can be utilized. A bilingual assistant is nice, but what happens when you get a student that speaks another language than the first student and the assistant. As a teacher, you will have to focus on strategies that teach the content while using concrete objects or visuals to reinforce was is being taught.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would do exactly this. I feel that as future educators we need to be prepared for anything that comes our way and not be dependent on an assistant. Although their help is nice, we need to be able to teach our students for ourselves in case we do not receive a assistant or they are only with us for a short time.

Comments: I agree that gestures, visuals, simple questions, etc. are great ways to help communicate easier with the students who do not speak English. It is important to know about these things because like you said what if the student spoke in a language the interpreter and yourself did not know? It is important to come up with simple ways to communicate with the child.

Comments:
All of these are great solutions to try and make the student comfortable in the classroom and adjust to not having a bilingual assistant there. Just enforcing the content and making sure you are using simple terms that will make sense to the child is very important to help them not feel so frustrated and overwhelmed.
