  Case: Hands in Pants
Andrew has a problem with his hands during classwork and independent work. He puts his hand into his pants while doing his work. I try to pull him aside and tell him that big kids don't put their hand in their pants. He says he understands but it seems as though it is a habit that he can not break. It might be supplemented by the parents or that they don't care if he does it or not. I plan on addressing the parents with the issue but what can I do if they become uncooperative.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Two things are important here. First, what are the antecedents to this specific behavior? It is important to find out if there is something that triggers this behavior. Second, it is important to make sure he is occupied at all times, especially while breaking this habit. Perhaps you can give him something to hold during class, as a distraction.

Comments: Breaking a habit can be extremely difficult and you have to be understanding of that. A habit like this one can come from many different places and needs to be handled with care.

Comments: Giving the student something to play with while he works will not break the habit but merely avert the attention away from the pants. Eventually this habit will get easier to break as the manipulatives being used get simpler

Comments: I agree that it is important to find out what has triggered the behavior. I never thought of but think it is a good idea for Andrew would be to give him something to hold or to keep him distracted/busy at all times. I would definitely use these tools in my class if something like this happened.

Comments: This is a great solution. Working to figure out what triggers this behavior is essential in helping the student break this habit. Providing the student with other objects to fidget with or touch during class may also help them replace their old behaviors with new behaviors.

Comments: I think this is a great suggestion, it could be comforting to him or it could stem from other issues so i would definitely try to replace this with something else to hold or to get the parents more involved or talk to the school guidance counselor or an administrator if you can’t break this behavior by giving him a replacement
