Case: Peanut Allergy
A little boy, let's call him Jeremy, is highly allergic to peanuts. The students in his class know this and the classroom door even has a sign on it that says "no peanut zone." It seems that there have been some issues at lunch with students threatening Jeremy with peanut butter--all playful, but saying things like "look, Jeremy, PEANUT BUTTER!!!" and holding it inches from his face. Is simply talking to the students at fault enough? Should other actions be taken?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
There needs to be serious consequences for that. Depending on the severity of the allergy, it could be a matter of his well-being. |

Comments: As a teacher of course I think there needs to be consequences for the actions of students specifically in a situation like this. I also believe that you should teach students about what could possibly happen to the student, he could have to go to the hospital if he comes in contact with the allergen. I think that just having a consequence isn't always enough for students to understand the importance of the situation. |

Comments: Simply restating the problem at hand and realizing the severity is not a solution to the problem. |

Comments: I think that before you can punish the children the teacher should have a health lesson on allergies and how dangerous/serious they can be. I don't think it is fair depending on the age and grade to punish the children until they have learned how serious allergies can be. |

Comments: The students who are doing this may not realize the severity of his allergic reaction, or even what this means. If they are doing this jokingly they may think he just doesn't like it. Some students might not have seen an allergic reaction before and don't know the consequences. Unless you know for sure that they know what these are and how severe his is then you should determine how to explain it to them before jumping straight into a consequence. |

Comments: I don't believe the children understand the severity of their actions. They need to be talked to before being given consequences. They should only be given consequences if they repeat the behavior after being educated on why their behavior is wrong. |

Comments: since the intent is harmless, perhaps more education less punishment |
