  Case: Stealing in Kindergarten
I have a student who steals. She went into another students backpack and took her lunch money. It is appropriate to tell the student that if she steals when she grows up that she will go to jail?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I don't see anything wrong with telling the student of serious consequences, otherwise how will they change their behavior? That sad thing too is that this seems to be some type of learned behavior, because I can't believe a kindergarten child would think to do that on their own!

Comments: This is a kindergarten student, not an adult who can follow the reasoning of "if you steal, you're going to jail." Why not have a lesson about stealing and the effects it has on others, including how the people you steal from feel.

Comments: Here is my issue, if you tell them they will go to jail when they grow up they will think that they can continue to steal until they grow up because nothing bad will happen now.

Comments: This is not a good solution to this case, the student will not understand the severity of jail and will not link that she needs to stop stealing now.

Comments: Just as the above solution suggests, the student is too young to have any connection to the meaning of "going to jail" this is a too far off idea for a young child and it needs to be explained to her as a current consequence.

Comments: Though I agree that a student should be told consequences. Telling the child that she will go to jail seams like something that would not fix the problem but rather would just scare the child.

Comments: It's definitely picked up behavior they've seen. Maybe from watching tv or maybe from parents idk. But nowadays these little kids are smarter than what we think.. Also as early as kindergarten believe that they would steal cause they would.

Comments: I don't think any lasting benefit will stem from threatening jail time to a kindergartener. They most likely will have a hard time even grasping such a concept and if they do they'll be met with unnecessary fear. Instead, I think it's better to relate to them through a lesson on the importance of kindness, permission, and possible consequences in the classroom.
