  Case: Blaming The Teacher
I have witnessed many parents who like to make excuses for their children. They also like to blame the teacher. I have heard several comments such as "well, what did you do to make Bobby mad?" I have never known the proper approach to dealing with these situations.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would need to know the whole situation. I am assuming that the child did something wrong and was disciplined, then the child got mad over being disciplined. That being the case, my response would have been, "I did my job!" Maybe Bobby doesn't get disciplined much at home, but when he's in my classroom, he's expected to follow my rules. If he doesn't, he gets disciplined. Parents who don't discipline their children frequently make excuses for them. Let them blame me all they want. Fact of the matter is that in society there are rules that are expected to be followed too. They are called laws. When Bobby grows up and breaks a law, he will go to jail. Case closed!

Comments: I would never do this! This is wrong! You are adding more fuel to the fire by throwing blame back on the parents.

Comments: So what exactly is the solution you're suggesting? Answering with "I did my job" will not help to build relationships with your students parents even if they came at you first. Why not listen, show empathy and work on a solution together?

Comments: I understand where you are coming from but I feel that there is a better way to explain how you feel as the teacher to the parent. I feel that it is important to have a conference with the parents and try to see where they are coming from as well. I know that there are some parents who are out there that try to blame the teacher for their mistakes but just see where they are coming from and if they are actually trying to blame just you or looking for help and don't know how or who to ask.

Comments: I would not approach a parent like this in this situation. This doesn't help the parent understand what is going on, does not solve what is causing the anger the child experiences in class, and it causes conflict between the teacher and parent.

Comments: Yelling at a parent will never solve a problem. Teachers have to be more professional and respectful even when a parent isn't.

Comments: I would not do this, I would never respond to a parent in the tone of " I was doing my job" it comes across as threatening, and with this response you are just attacking the character of the student.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would not use this solution. This tactic seems more like a "blame the parent" meeting rather than a "let's help the student" meeting. Yelling and accusing the parent will make matters worse for the teacher and the student.

Comments: Talking harshly to a parent is never a solution. You want to be calm and enforcing the rules is great but there is a line that doesn't need to be crossed.
