Case: New Teacher to not so new kids
This year I was the new kid of the class. My students had been together since kindergarden. What are a few tips for new teachers, when the kids aren't so new?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would say have many ice breaker activities on hand that allow for you to get to know them, but are more fun on their part. In fact, typical ice breaker activities may still be fun for them because you could say "I know you all have known each other since Kindergarten, but I don't know you so well. So now I can have a chance to get to know you, and you all can test each other to see just how well your friends know you!" If you make it into a game, they will respond better. However, always remember that establishing authority is important, too. So, don't make it seem like it is all going to be "fun and games."

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would exactly do this. First impressions are vital to establishing a working relationship with your students. Have a relevant, but fun activity while on the same day establishing authority is a good starting point for the rest of the school year.

Comments: I think this is the best way to loosen up the classroom and help everyone to become a little more connected and comfortable within the classroom. Once this feeling of trust is established it will be easier to assert the respect and authority aspects.
