She has her nose pierced and although the piercing is discrete it is still noticeable. School policy is against facial jewelry for students, but does not have the same rule for faculty. Several students have argued that the rule is unjust because teachers are suppose to be role models. What course of action should take place if any? Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!) If there is no rule regarding facial piercings for students, then a course of action does not have to take place. That being said, the teacher is taking a position that contradicts many characteristics a good, and genuinely caring teacher should possess. If there is no rule against it, the the teacher does not need any sort of action taken against her. Allowing the students and parents to dispute this issue may be helpful for them, as the administration may side with them and take action. However, it is possible that the parents and students disputing this may not make any change in the rule. Since there is no rule against facial piercings, no action needs to be take. However, I also agree that the teacher needs to set a good example for their students. It is some what of self expression to teen agers or defiance depending on the student. But i do fee that this rule should be changed. Having a nose piercing shouldn't detract from who she is as a person or teacher. Also, being caring has nothing to do with if a teacher has piercings or not. Characteristics of teachers don't just revolve around their appearance, it deals with more of how well they teach. If a piercing is discreet for a teacher, they know the rules for themselves and know what's appropriate and what's not. However, I do agree that the students and parents can decide to try to petition to get the rules changed, because it is not always fair as a student that they can't express their individuality, including not allowing them to have facial piercings.
