Case: Hygiene
Albert is a 20 year old student in a self contained classroom. He continually is arriving to school with severe hygiene issues. His parents say he is bathed daily. From the evidence he is exhibiting the bathing is not happening. What is the best way to address this issue?

To start, I would implement a lesson on hygiene, followed by a special assignment for this student. I would provide him with a checklist that includes pictures, of expected daily hygiene. He would be responsible for checking the tasks off as he completed them every night. For the first week or so, we would have a private meeting every morning to review his progress. |

| Comments: I worry that this solution would really embarrass the student. Having a lesson on hygiene for the class and then only giving one student a special assignment would single him out for having bad hygiene. If every student in the class was given the same assignment, I think it would be better. |

| Comments: This is an appropriate solution because it is a lesson for all students, it does not individualize Albert. I would send health hygiene assignments home and a checklist of expected daily hygiene just like this solution stated. I would hope Albert would be able to catch onto the hygiene morning ritual himself and that would solve the problem. If his hygiene does not improve then I would discuss with the guidance counselor ways to confront the family without offended them. |
