Case: Combative Behavior
Myles has a learning disability. When Myles has a difficult time completing a task he shuts down and does nothing. When he is asked to keep working he becomes combative and starts to exhibit inappropriate behavior. What would work to calm Myles and keep him on task with his assignment?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I have seen classroom teachers using a "Green, Yellow, Red" chart in the classroom to allow students to show the teacher if they are understanding the material (Green), need help with the material (Yellow), or do not understand at all (Red). Each student gets their own chart to have at their desk while they work on their assignment. Implementing one of these strategies in the classroom may allow Myles to show the teacher that he is struggling before he becomes stressed and shuts down. This will allow the teacher to have a visual of when Myles is struggling, without needing Myles to vocalize his issue. Solving the problem before it escalates into a negative situation will help keep Myles on task, and the classroom as safe as possible for all students. |

Comments: This solution will allow Myles to advocate for himself if he needs help without standing out. |

Comments: Although this may help, one of the reasons he may be shutting down is because he feels embarrassed that he doesn't understand the work. Using this system may make that worse. |

Comments: I think it's great for the chart to be used so teachers can see if students are grasping the concept and if not they can get the help they need by the teacher walking. Since the students have a chart at own desk it allows them to be honest on how they feel so they can not be judged by their peers. Sometimes the students will follow the majority and say they understand the concepts if the chart is in front of the class instead of stating they don't understand the concept. This suggestion would be a safe tool for students to use in regard to confidence and learning while also providing a solution for the teacher to implement in their classroom management. |

Comments: While I understand where you are coming from if it is vocalizing his trouble areas that is the main concerns, putting them on display where others can see may be just as useless in trying to get him to be assertive. |
