  Case: Computer, I-Pad issues
John has severe ASD. He is only interested with working at the computer station or on the I-pad. He becomes increasingly disruptive when he has to attend to different classwork. What is a suitable strategy to modify his behavior?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Allowing the student to complete his work only at the computer station or on the iPad is not only unfair to the rest of the class who have to complete some of their work away from the computers, but is also unfair to John in the long run. Students need to have experience competing work using multiple sources. Developing skills with other sources will prepare them for future education setting as well as the real world. I would sit down with John and tell him that he cannot complete all of his work using these technological items. I would remind him that using the computer and iPad are privileges, and that if he continues to not complete his work he will not be allowed to use these items at all. Using the iPad and computer as a reward system may help get John back on track.

Comments: I agree, the teacher would not be doing a good service to the student by allowing them to use the Ipad to complete all of their work. I think using it as a reward is a good idea.

Comments: Although this may be thought of as unfair, in my Autism Spectrum Disorder class, we are taught that often times students with ASD do become fixated on things. The important thing is that he get his work done. If his work must be done using technology, let the kid use technology. He is doing the assignment alternatively. Although they do need to practice following rules, if it is getting in the way of his assignments, it's better to look at the basics and understand what is most important for his success.

Comments: I feel that if it is the only way John is able to learn I don't think he should be punished because the rest of the class does not think it is fair. Every child learns differently and if that is the way that he learns he should be able to learn that way. I also don't agree that using the I-pad should be seen as a reward system if that is how he learns.
