  Case: Hygiene
Albert is a 20 year old student in a self contained classroom. He continually is arriving to school with severe hygiene issues. His parents say he is bathed daily. From the evidence he is exhibiting the bathing is not happening. What is the best way to address this issue?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would have a conference with the student, his parents, as well as the school's guidance councillor. I would explain to the parents that, although they claim Albert is being bathed, the his lack of hygiene is starting to become a distraction in the classroom. I would ask the parents and Albert what things they are doing nightly to promote good hygiene. I would have myself, as well as the guidance counsellor go over some other things that they should be doing. Albert will then have to go to the guidance counsellor weekly and discuss what actions are being taken at home to ensure personal hygiene.

Comments: I think that talking to the parents is a good idea, but you have to be careful of what you say because you do not want to embarss the child, or call out the parents because as a teacher that is not your job.

Comments: I would do the same in this situation. I believe having a discussion with the parents is important and also having a school counselor and nurse there would be helpful to provide professional support. Even though the parents say he is bathed regularly, it may be helpful to explain the school's concerns with how it is affecting the classroom environment and that the staff is there for his well being. The counselor may be able to ask a few questions and even have an investigation if they feel the student isn't being cared for properly.
