  Case: Stealing in Kindergarten
I have a student who steals. She went into another students backpack and took her lunch money. It is appropriate to tell the student that if she steals when she grows up that she will go to jail?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would start first by telling the student consequences that may occur if she continues to steal now. Telling the student that stealing when they grow up may lead to jail is an abstract concept for a kindergartener to comprehend. The student will have very little understanding of jail, and will have no connection to anything that far in the future. This student needs to understand the consequences and understand the situation as it relates to her current life. If the student see's the connection between what she is doing, and how it will effect her life and her peers lives currently, she will be much more inclined to understand.

Comments: This is a perfect solution. I don't think the child will understand anything about jail but the teacher should inform the child the consequences he or she will face at school.

Comments: I agree, talking about jail is a little harsh but if the problem continues after you talk to the student a few times, then I would discuss jail because the student does need to know that what they are doing is wrong.

Comments: Jail is not even about correction of behavior, it only exists to extort poor people.

By encouraging how things relate to each other, and how people relate to each other, you can make an impact.

Good solution.

Comments: I agree. At that age it may be hard for her to understand the concept of jail. The student needs to be punished for her actions but to also understand that it is wrong in a way that she will comprehend, such as having one of her toys taken, etc.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would do exactly this. I feel that by doing the strategies listed above, the situation can be attained much quicker than by just yelling at the child they will go to jail when they are older. As a teacher of young elementary school children, you want to be able to teach on their level, and not at the level of older children just quite yet. Hopefully these methods can be used to get rid of the problem now rather than later.

Comments: I agree, I know many children try to do something bad and immediately feel bad after if they know it is wrong. Maybe this child doesn't understand it is wrong so teaching the student why it is wrong would be the best way to help.
