Case: IEP Meeting
I am currently doing my student teaching. I am in an ESE environment. I had a student who had an accident one day last week. His IEP meeting was scheduled for that afternoon. However, his mother was upset that she had to come get him and refused to come back for the IEP meeting. I did not know how to respond. Any thoughts?

I would try to understand where the parent is coming from, and simply set up another meeting time with the parents and ESE team. ESE meetings are often missed and rescheduled, and although it may be inconvenient, the meetings are necessary. |

| Comments: I agree completely with your solution. I think that parents and teachers both need to have an understanding that both are human and should be assertive in scheduling the meeting but be compassionate when rescheduling needs to be done. |

| Comments: I agree with this solution that it would be best to reschedule the appointment and try to see where the Mother was coming from, and to also remind her how important the meetings are even if they feel unnecessary. |

| Comments: I agree but don't agree. I feel that yes it is not that big of a deal to reschedule the meeting. Although i do not feel that just because the child had an accident that the parent should be upset. Children have accidents, they are not perfect. There is no reason to get upset over it. It is part of their growth in learning. |

| Comments: I think this suggestions is a good one and rescheduling is the only option. Understanding parents and giving them the benefit of the doubt is the best course of action unless it becomes too frequent/unreasonable. The IEP meeting is meant to address issues that are important to the child's education therefore the parent should get every opportunity to be involved. |
