Case: Piercings
Mrs. Gala is a high school teacher with 22 years at the same school. She has her nose pierced and although the piercing is discrete it is still noticeable. School policy is against facial jewelry for students, but does not have the same rule for faculty. Several students have argued that the rule is unjust because teachers are suppose to be role models. What course of action should take place if any?

Wearing facial piercings does not constitute a teacher as being a bad role model. An important rule we are always teaching children/students is to judge people for the content of their character and not by the way they look. With all of this said, if there is no rule against it then there is no action to take except for possibly changing the rule for teachers or for changing the rule for the students. Either way, teachers should keep in mind that they have a responsibility to teach students the proper way of taking action if they want to make changes in "the law." This could be a great civics lesson for high school students. |

| Comments: I don't believe that the teacher is a bad role model because they have a nose ring. The issue I see is that kids will ask, why can you have one but I can't? and you can explain this to them if you wish. I as a teacher would probably follow the dress code that the students have to follow so they do ask these questions, or think that since I am a teacher I can wear whatever I want. I would personally just conform to the rules that the students follow. |

I think it is important to remind students that just because of a teacher's physical look is different doesn't mean they aren't a responsible teacher. I also like how you provided an example of having a civics lesson on if the students want to become involved in student government and change the rule for students to be allowed to or teachers to not be allowed to. I think it would get students more involved in politics and standing up for their rights. |

| Comments: I agree. However, thinking that you are not going to be judged by how you look is childish. If we weren't judged by how we look more people would show up to job interviews wearing shorts and flip flops. The reality is that we are going to be judged. If this teacher was wearing her piercing during her interview and was hired anyway, then she should feel comfortable knowing that her employer isn't bothered by it. However, she should be aware that the parents of her students may find it inappropriate, which may lead to problems. |

Personally I have had piercing that would be considered unprofessional and took them out. I had them in when I was teaching a out when I was teaching.
