Case: Inappropriate Comments
I have a student who is consistently rude to me and makes comments that make me uncomfortable. I am in a TEBD setting so inappropriate language is nothing new, however, I do not appreciate the way I am talked to and I do not know how to stop it. Just talking to them doesn't do much at all.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
It is very difficult to deal with EBD, and TEBD students. They definitely propose a unique problem to teachers. I work with an EBD student myself and here are some solutions have have worked to keep his behavior in check: The use of a behavior chart that he must get signed off by all classroom teachers as well as his parents (this includes small rewards such as candy or small toys for days where there behavior is in check), positive praise when the student is making the right choices, removal of a desired activity depending on grade level, phone call home to parents, as well as the possibility of giving lunch detentions and writing referrals with the support of your CT. Always remember to warn them first! Give them a choice. "You can either stop with these comments or continue your work or x will happen". I hope you find this solution helpful! |

Comments: By making the student responsible for their behavior to all teacher and parents it may help the team dealing with this child get on the same page and the student may enjoy the rewards. |

Comments: This solution was very helpful because it offered may specific details and suggestions. I also feel it would be a good idea to offer a special lunch with the teacher as an incentive. Perhaps the student is disrespectful for attention and simply doesn't know how to garner positive attention. This would also help to build a positive relationship dynamic. |

Comments: Giving the students a warning and telling them the choice they need to make is great advice. Constant praise is also very important! |
