Case: Always Late
Jorge is a new student to school. He has recently moved from Mexico with his family. When he arrived, he knew no English. He is slowly improving, but he is far behind his classmates. He receives ESOL services, and help from a bilingual assistant. However, the bilingual assistant cannot spend time doing her ESOL curriculum because she must help him catch up on his classroom. He misses at least 30 minutes of classroom time every morning, because his parents always drop him off late. His parents speak no English and are not accustomed to the concepts of early and late in the United States, since they recently moved from Mexico. What should the classroom teacher do?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would set up a meeting with the parents and a bilingual assistant and express the importance of having their child arrive on time to school everyday. |

Comments: One thing that I have learned is that it is very hard to organize parents, you, a bilingual instructor and childcare at the same time! It is very hard to meet with ESOL parents, especially at school. Planning a phone call is much more efficient and can get to the parents quicker than the information in a letter or a meeting. |

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would not use this solution because it can be very hard with the language barrier to find a meeting place and time for a conference with the non-English speaking family. I would much rather have the bilingual translator compose an email that I know they will receive. |

Comments: Having a face to face meeting with the parents will help build a relationship with the parents and will help them understand the importance of coming on time. |

Comments: I would be cautious of this because they may not be able to make it to a meeting so you want to have other strategies ready. |

Comments: I am not sure if this is the best solution. I would send a letter home first, then have a meeting if it continues. |

Comments: This is a solution i would not use because as a parents, I think they would appreciate a warning letter, if that does not work then proceed into a face to face meeting. |

Comments: there might be a reason he is late, so I think having a general conference with the family would be better rather than explaining the importance of being on time
