  Case: Peanut Allergy
A little boy, let's call him Jeremy, is highly allergic to peanuts. The students in his class know this and the classroom door even has a sign on it that says "no peanut zone." It seems that there have been some issues at lunch with students threatening Jeremy with peanut butter--all playful, but saying things like "look, Jeremy, PEANUT BUTTER!!!" and holding it inches from his face. Is simply talking to the students at fault enough? Should other actions be taken?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would have a health lesson on different allergies and the sometimes dangerous allergic reactions. I think it is important to cover some of the most common allergies so that I was not calling "Jeremy" out. This lesson could also be combined with a lesson on respecting other people's needs and space. Besides the peanut allergy, students should understand to respect other people's personal space.

Comments: I agree with this being something that the students should learn about on a more serious level. They need to understand the issues behind the food allergies.

Comments: I agree that students need to be educated on the different types of allergies there are. You can even say that people are allergic to flowers, but some people might have to be hospitalized if the reaction is serve enough and teaching your students the consequences to their actions is also important for them to understand what could happen if this continues.

Comments: I agree with your solution. I think it is a good idea to have a health lesson on allergies while not making it directly towards Jeremy's allergy. Students need to be educated on respecting peoples personal space while also not being bullies even if they see it as only fun. They need to see the severity of certain side effects to allergies and even getting a school nurse involved will help the students see it more seriously.

Comments: I think this is a good start but if talking and training doesn't change the students' poor behavior toward Jeremy then I would involve the parents.

Comments: I believe this is a good solution as it is important to inform the students why Jeremy can't have peanuts or peanut butter. Even so, Jeremy could potentially die if it is a severe allergy so maybe having the school nurse come in as well to talk could really help the students understand why they shouldn't tease Jeremy for his allergies. So yes I feel that a lesson on respect and allergies could be a great solution to having students understand, respect, and not make fun of Jeremy.

Comments: I agree that the teacher should have a health lesson on allergies and focus on how serious and dangerous they can be to people. I really like how you said to incorporate a lesson respecting people's personal space as well because it is important to realize what that means. I would even add maybe having the school nurse come in and talk about allergies. I really liked how you would have handle this situation.

Comments: This is a good idea because it won't single Jeremy out and make him embarrassed. It also will help students understand what types of allergies people can have and how severe some can be. They will also be able to learn what to do in the case of this type of emergency, who to get for help. It does also tie in with people's space and how they need personal space because it's their rights and we need to respect that.

Comments: Teaching children about allergies and what can happen if a person comes into contact with their allergen would be an effective solution. It would provide them with a knowledge of what could happen if they actually touched Jeremy with the peanut butter.

Comments: This is a great solution because most students do not fully understand why some children are allergic to certain things or what happens if they are exposed. This could definitely put the allergy into perspective for other students.
