  Case: ESOL students with ASD
What types of teaching materials are available for students with severe ASD who are pre-production with language acquisition? I have used k-2 reading level picture books and picture flashcards to develop word recognition and the help of a bilingual assistant. The student is not engaged, any suggestions?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would stick with the picture flashcards because they are much simpler than the books. I would also try different interests the child may have such as Thomas the Train or football. You could also use candy as a motivator. You want to always give the student the language you want them to use. Students with autism learn at a much slower rate than typical students so you need to take that into consideration. Also they are generally not motivated to do school work so they may always seem unengaged but that doesn't mean that they are not learning. I worked in a autism school and we used the VB-MAPP as a tool and guide to teach sever autism students that had no language.

Comments: I feel that pictures and some motivation could help the student to want to learn and help them with memorization since pictures are a useful too. I also agree that students with a disability like autism might have a harder time learning and might need more time to do so. Using pictures or items they can relate to is also another idea that can help the student learn as well. I really like this solution.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would do exactly this. I feel that sometimes when working with ASD children who are also ESOL, picture flashcards are genius. This can help lower the affective filter of the students. They can really help the students become familiarized with everyday things and actions.

Comments: I am not sure if we can say that ASD students are usually unmotivated. I don't think unmotivated is the word to use here.
