  Case: Combative Behavior
Myles has a learning disability. When Myles has a difficult time completing a task he shuts down and does nothing. When he is asked to keep working he becomes combative and starts to exhibit inappropriate behavior. What would work to calm Myles and keep him on task with his assignment?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Try talking with Myles to determine his triggers. Is it a certain subject matter that frustrates him the most? If you can narrow down where he is having difficulty you can better determine a solution. You may have to go back and teach him a concept that you did not realize he was not grasping.

Comments: This is what we discuss in my ASD course and I completely agree. I think you need to figure out what the function of the behavior is.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would exactly do this. Taking the time to speak with the student individually helps the teacher better understand what problems Myles is having and shows him that you are there to make sure he succeeds.

Comments: I agree! Looking into the triggers and what helps and does not help will ensure that you help fix this behavior. Positive reinforcement would help in this situation as well.
