  Case: Walking in a Line
Ms. Blanchard's 5th grade class is fairly well-behaved. They adhere to most classroom rules and can be managed pretty well in the classroom using a clip chart. However, in the halls it is a totally different story. The students feel that since they are 5th graders, and see other 5th grade classes not having to walk in a line, they shouldn't have to either. Ms. Blanchard has tried a reward system, threatening to clip students down, etc. But, it seems as if the entire class is always misbehaving so she just doesn't know what to do. Other teachers, especially primary grade teachers who have students looking to 5th grade as an example, are beginning to make comments. What can be done?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would try setting up a reward system for compliments the class receives in the hall. For every 5 compliments the class receives from other faculty members, they get an ice-cream or popsicle party (or anything they choose and is manageable). Try and get other teachers involved with what you are doing so they can be sure to make the compliments and play along, especially the teachers that have been making the negative comments.

Comments: I think having something for the students to work towards and involving the faculty and other teachers is a great idea. Maybe your could involve the other 5th grade classes that are misbehaving when walking in a line, so if Ms. Blanchard's class sees them participating, they might be more willing to participate also.

Comments: I agree 100% with your solution using a reward system; it's exactly what I was thinking! Why punish the entire class or even the ones who consistently misbehave since that's probably their way of getting attention. Give the students positive attention instead of negative attention.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would exactly do this. Setting up a reward system with the students and getting other teachers involved is a good way to encourage them to behave accordingly.

Comments: I feel that it's important to talk to the other faculty staff members to get therm on board with what the class get back together. Along with the compliments from the faculty members, it would be great if the faculty got their classes to follow the same rules to help motivate the class. But I feel that other faculty members' compliments could help motivate students to keep up the good work.

Comments: I like the reward system you mentioned. In high school I volunteered to help a kindergarten class and the teacher used a chart with how many compliments the students received that week. When the number was up to 15, the class had an ice cream party, pizza party, etc.

Comments: This is a good solution that might work for the students. The only part that may not work is that it relies on other staff to comment on student behavior (which they may sometimes fail to do).

Comments: Allowing the students to see that others actually pay attention to them in the hallway is a great way to keep them in order. When they receive any type of compliment they enjoy getting that praise so for the other teachers and faculty to compliment them would be great because they can feel good about it. Besides they can realize how much of a role model they actually can be to the younger kids when they see them.

Comments: great idea. it rewards all students for their good behavior as well as models what they should be doing in a line for other students younger or older.

Comments: I love this idea. Giving them an incentive really motivates them to be good role models for the other students in the building. Let them know they are the top dogs and being looked up to so they need to set a good example.

Comments: I like this solution. This takes the focus off of just walking in a line and more on proper hallway behavior.
